About
Air conditioning (AC) Engineers require some formal education. Learn about the training, job duties and requirements to see if this is the right career for you. Air conditioning engineers are concerned about internal climate control and are responsible for the air quality of homes and businesses. Ideally an AC Engineer would be mechanically minded and have an interest in maintaining a comfortable climate.
Career
AC Engineers, also known as AC technicians, install and maintain the mechanical and electrical components of air conditioning systems. They may diagnose and repair air-conditioning problems throughout homes or buildings. They may also test the performance of the cooling system with specialized tools and equipment.
Job Prospects
Air-conditioning engineers support, maintain and help design air conditioning systems, often for large and complex buildings like factories. According to the Whole Building Design Guide, an air conditioning engineer may also be referred to as a type of mechanical engineer of record. Air conditioning engineers primarily address seven topics: heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, ventilating and effectiveness, according to the Whole Building Design Guide. Engineers are key contributors to a project in its developing stages, providing information on the requirements and feasibility of a project, as well as the resulting costs.
Remuneration
Statistics provided by the BLS indicated that future job growth for air conditioning engineers might remain steady, since employment growth for mechanical engineers was estimated to grow 5% from 2014-2024. The median salary for mechanical engineers was $83,590 in May 2015, according to the BLS.
